We combined our learning in Topic and PE and did some orienteering using maps. We learnt that it is important to hold the map correctly when following directions. We also learnt about the symbols which are used on ordnance survey maps and did an activity where we matched the words to the correct symbols. Everyone showed excellent team player skills in this and really enjoyed it!
In today’s PE lesson we were working on our team building skills and had to organise an obstacle course using set equipment. We had to give clear instructions and tried each other’s obstacle courses. We offered constructive feedback to the other groups about what worked well and what could be improved.
This morning we were treated to an assembly from Music for Schools Foundation. We were shown a trumpet, clarinet, flute and saxophone and were shown how the instruments work and the different techniques needed to play them. Lessons for these instruments will be offered to the children. A leaflet will be sent home tonight with the details!
Amazing Homework – travel the world with our famous landmarks.
In Topic this term we are looking at maps. We started by looking at an atlas and how it has an index to help you to locate places. We have also looked at the use of a key for the symbols used in a map and how to locate places using grid references. We will be looking more in depth at grid references and compass points.
Maths – Place Value
Our first unit in Maths is place value and we have been reinforcing our understanding of the value each digit within each number by using dienes, drawing the numbers and making them. We have been ordering numbers, comparing, rounding and even looking at negative numbers.
This term, year 4 are having ukulele lessons with Mr Clarke. We have discussed tempo and pitch to make sure that the children are aware of the musical terminology. They have learnt the difference between strumming the strings to play a chord and plucking a single string to play an individual note. They have also learnt that the strings are A E C and G and learnt Always Eat Cake Greedily to help them to remember.
Science – States of Matter
In Science we are learning about the different states of matter: solids, liquids and gases. We went out into the playground to show the particles behave in each of these different states.
